By Justin Jordan, Brad Walker and Geraldo Borges
This is the first issue of Green Lantern New Guardians since the end of lights out, which ended with many people believing Kyle to be dead. It’s finally good to have this title be it’s own book for once, instead of being part of a cross over, which seems to have been played out for the green lanterns recently.
Carol has been called to the planet Exuras where she finds that Kyle is alive. Hugs and explanations are given, but the problem is that Exuras seems perfect, almost too perfect. There is a sense of fear in the air and it’s up to Kyle and Carol to get to the bottom of it.
This issue is a breath of fresh air from the many tie-in issues of late. Justin Jordan seems to be coming into a comfortable groove with Kyle, and it is paying off, as he is being written very well. Jordan is also forging a nice, if not romantic, relationship between Kyle and Carol, which should lead to interesting stories in the future. The reason for the perfect planet is very well thought out and different, so Jordan deserves a big kudos for coming up with an idea that is pretty original.
Brad Walkers art has shown improvement since last issue. Kyle no longer looks like a small child in panels, which is always a plus. His clean lines and details on the faces of the alien creatures is very impressive, and you can tell he took his time with this issue and got back into a good pace. The brief glimpse we get of the hellish dimension is also a gorgeous panel; he brought some of his best work this month.
Green Lantern New Guardians seems like it is back on track for some good old-fashioned sci-fi fun. Jordan excels when he is able to take his time and put together well thought out stories and Brad Walker improves with every issue. This is a smarter book than people give it credit for and is absolutely worth a read.
