Our Best Of… 2013 has been a fun one. The All-Comic Crew has had multiple rounds of voting, sorting through many, many potential winners to get to this point. As mention in the nominees post, there really are tons of comic creators and books out there and it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few. Support your favorites with your wallet and word of mouth and if you disagree with our winners, well, hopefully you voted in our Fan Vote. If that still doesn’t satisfy you, then my all means let us know your winners in the comment section below!

Best On-Going Series (6 or more issues)

Winner: Saga by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples
Runner Ups: Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja and Daredevil by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee

Well, if I said this was close… I’d be lying. This was a blow out from the All-Comic Crew. Saga has been, and remains, one of the best comics on the shelf, regardless of publisher. Daredevil and Hawkguy are two fantastic series, and to see results like this really puts the power that Saga has into perspective. If for some reason you’re not reading Saga, it’s time you head to your comic shop and pick up the first two trades and see what all the fuss is about.

Fan Vote Winner: Saga with 55% of the votes.

Best New On-Going Series (less than 6 issues)

Winner: Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Johnny “Roc” Upchurch
Runner Ups: Black Science by Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera and Ghosted by Joshua Williamson and Goran Sudzuka

This came down to one vote between all three nominees. Rat Queens is something else that very well could end up being the next Saga for Image Comics. Wiebe and Upchurch have some new and exciting for comic fans with this series. The more we learn about the characters, the more we want from this creative duo. Don’t expect Rat Queens to go anywhere any time soon and don’t be surprised if this tops Saga on a lot of lists for 2014.

Fan Vote Winner: Black Science with 57% of the votes.

Best Mini-Series/Original Graphic Novel

Winner: Trillium by Jeff Lemire
Runner Ups: Black Beetle by Francesco Francavilla and The Wake by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy

Jeff Lemire’s creator owned work from Vertigo takes top spot for many reasons. Among them, Lemire’s ability to really make the reader feel for his characters and the story. Did I mention he’s not only writing but drawing as well? 100% Jeff Lemire awesomeness. Trillium is a love story that spans time itself and with only a few issues left, this mini-series is going to be one for the ages. If you’ve missed out on this book, there will undoubtedly be a fantastic collection when all is said and done–or you could try this out digitally or track down the single issues at comic shops around your town. Either way, read this series!

Fan Vote Winner: The Wake with 44% of the votes.

Upside down comics! Jeff Lemire out did himself and continues to do so with Trillium.

Best Event

Winner: Death of the Family from DC Comics
Runner Ups: Battle of the Atom from Marvel and Forever Evil from DC Comics

The Joker’s return to the DC Universe’s rebooted New 52 was huge. Starting in 2012 and ending in 2013, crossing over with multiple books, this was a return on the grandest of scales. Batman architects Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, as well as the countless other creators on all the cross over series, out did themselves with this re-introduction to The Joker, easily making this the Best Event of 2013.

Fan Vote Winner: Death of the Family with 55% of the votes.

Best Publisher

Winner: Image Comics
Runner Ups: Marvel and DC Comics

Quite frankly, Image Comics has been untouchable in 2013. They continue to put out impressive series by impressive creators each and every week and just when you think they can’t do any better, they come out with another new series that blows you out of the water. This was without a doubt a blow out from the All-Comic Crew, and no contest in the Fan Vote. Image Comics is here to stay, and don’t be surprised if before long we’re talking about the Big Three–if you aren’t already referring to Image as such.

Fan Vote Winner: Image Comics with 66% of the vote.

Best Writer

Winner: Jeff Lemire
Runner Ups: Brian K. Vaughn and Jonathan Hickman

Jeff Lemire has been on fire in 2013. Between his work in the DC Universe and his creator owned worked, there’s no stopping this talented writer from the Great White North. It seems like Jeff Lemire can do no wrong, and as one of the best writers not only in DC’s stable but in all of comics, it’s going to be interesting to see how he tops himself in 2014. This was a close one, folks. By one vote, Jeff Lemire takes the title of Best Writer of 2013.

Fan Vote Winner: Brian K. Vaughn with 44% of the votes.

Best Interior Artist

Winner: Chris Samnee
Runner Ups: Fiona Staples and Francesco Francavilla

Chris Samnee, known for his work on Daredevil with Mark Waid and his work on Adventures of Superman, among other things, has had a stellar 2013 and it’s really no surprise that he’s taken the All-Comic Crew’s stop spot, even if it was only by one vote, as Best Interior Artist of 2013. Here’s to more Daredevil and much more Chris Samnee in 2014!

Fan Vote Winner: Fiona Staples with 43% of the votes.

Best Colorist

Winner: Jordie Bellaire
Runner Ups: Dave Stewart and Matt Hollingsworth

Jordie Bellaire has been everywhere this year. Her work load is massive and we all wonder how she manages to find the time, not to mention how she manages to do such a fantastic job. She’s worked on titles like Half Past Danger, Numbercrunchers, Pretty Deadly, Journey into Mystery, Mara, The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror, Quantum and Woody, American Vampire Anthology and so much more. There really isn’t enough space to list everything she’s worked on in 2013 alone.

Fan Vote Winner: Matt Hollingsworth with 40% of the votes.

Best Cover Artist

Winner: Francesco Francavilla
Runner Ups: Jock and Fiona Staples

Another creator in comics that never seems to slow down. Every week you’re likely to see at least one book with Francavilla’s name on the cover, be it for the cover art itself or his fantastic interior work. His cover work for various Dynamite titles, Marvel, IDW, Afterlife with Archie and so much more easily puts this artist and his oh-so Francavillian work on top as our Best Cover Artist of 2013.

Fan Vote Winner: Francesco Francavilla with 51% of the votes.

Some recent Francavillian awesomeness.

Well, that’s it folks. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this as much as we have. We want to thank all the fantastic creators that made our lists, and all those who might have missed the cut. 2014 is going to be another fantastic year of comics, so stay tuned, support your favorites and, of course Worship Comics!
