I rarely ever do these sorts of lists, but with Thanksgiving being this week and so many great things going on in the world of comics I thought it might be nice to take a few minutes to let you all know what I am thankful for within the medium. So without further adieu, let’s get down to business!
1. I am thankful that digital comics are taking off and becoming a legitimate form of reading and distributing comics. It allows readers who can’t get to, or don’t have a comic shop at all the ability to read these wonderful books. It also allows creators the ability to save the large overhead costs on printing, and in turn maybe reach a larger audience by going strictly digital. In all seriousness, who doesn’t have a Smartphone, computer or tablet these days? Probably not too many people. And, lastly it saves space and that is definitely the icing on the cake for me!
2. I am thankful that so many creators are taking a chance and creating their own independent books that they have complete control of. Every time you turn around it seems like there’s an announcement from publishers like Image, BOOM! Studios or Monkeybrain regarding the plethora of new creator-owned books coming out. My pull list of DC and Marvel has slowly been taken over by books like Drumhellar, Strange Nation, Theremin, Prime-8s and Chew just to name a few.
3. I am thankful for secondary stores like Half Priced Books that allow me the ability to find trades and graphic novels that I wouldn’t otherwise take a chance on at full price, the ability to do so at a much lower rate. There’s also an element of surprise, because you never know what you’ll find when you go in there. Lastly, if you’re a single issue collector a lot of locations have quite a few back issues too! Don’t just take my word for it; check them out!
4. I am thankful for sites like All-Comic which allow lovers of the medium a platform to facilitate areas of discussion, as well as the ability to connect with creators and other equally minded fans. It’s communities like these that make reading these books more engrossing as well as entertaining. The medium of comics thrives on, as well as survives by word of mouth and these sites get the word out. Plain and simple.
So, what do you all think? These are just a few things that I am thankful for this year, and perhaps a few for you all to chew on as well. So, now that you know what I am thankful for, what are you all thankful for? Feel free to hit me up on twitter, or share your thoughts in the comments below.
In the meantime, have a good holiday and see you all next week.
Happy eating!
