It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for another new edition of Kickin’ It Old School, our weekly column in which we look to the past and review books from the original Valiant universe! This week, I’ll be discussing Harbinger #10.

Synopsis:

The Renegades return from the Lost Land to the doctor’s home. When they leave, they find a place to live and find jobs, with Pete applying at Orb Industries with a recommendation from Doctor Hayward. They head out to search for other psiots to join their team and find Shatiqua. While they’re talking with her, they are jumped by the HARD Corps! After a serious fight, HARD Corps flees when Pete gets the upper hand. He lets them go to deliver his message to Harada and the Renegades head somewhere safe to talk with Shatiqua.

Review:

This was a pretty fun issue, but there was a lot of quick transition as the kids get settled out on their own. The debut of HARD Corps is cool, but they come off a lot weaker than they do in their initial VEI attack. They don’t really have a clue what they’re getting into here, though, whereas in VEI they understand the powers that the kids possess. The art is good as usual, but is particularly interesting in the arcade, with all of the neon lights. One interesting panel is a view of the city that is obviously a real photograph that has been altered. It really sticks out like a sore thumb. I’m curious as to why they chose to do this.
