by Jen Van Meter, Roberto De La Torre

One of my most eagerly anticipated books, The Death Defying Dr. Mirage #5, is out today marking the final issue of the miniseries. Will the creative team of Jen Van Meter and Roberto De La Torre deliver a killer finale or leave us wandering through the Deadside. Read on to find out!

As Ivros and his demon horde get closer to the gate to the world of the living, Shan and Hwen must do whatever it takes to stop them. Hwen decides to split his staff in two, giving Shan one half, and saving the other for himself, as the staff is imbued with the spirits of many drowned souls. Shan jumps through the gate to attempt to free herself from the clutches of the brotherhood who are about to sacrifice, while Hwen stays behind to stop Ivros and attempt to close the gate himself.

I won’t continue with the rest of the plot of this book because it would spoil many of the surprises, but what a joy this issue was to read. The Death Defying Dr. Mirage has been a long and arduous journey not only for Shan but also for many of us as readers.

Jen Van Meter has written a beautiful script with many intricate twists and turns and it’s nice to see how well everything was resolved in this issue. Some of the confusing plot points and pacing from some of the early issues, particularly 2 and 3, have gone by the wayside, offering a story that’s solid from start to finish. I did have some minor issues with some of the dialogue upon my first read of the issue, but quickly forgot them as I became more involved in the story on my second read through.

Roberto De La Torre’s has shown a strong performance throughout this miniseries, but his work excels in this final issue. Some of that may be due to the coloring being a little less dark here, no doubt symbolic of the changes which Shan goes has gone through, but the pencils just seemed more polished and emotive than in previous issues.

Overall, The Death Defying Dr. Mirage #5 is a terrific read and left me completely satisfied and hopeful for what’s to come. I know fans of this book have been dying to get more news about Dr. Mirage’s future, and between the ending of this book, and the little Easter egg at the end, there is no doubt in my mind that Shan has a very bright future ahead of her. This book is a definite must read, so if you haven’t read, pick up the entire 5 issue run.
