I hope everyone had a great weekend. Convention season is in effect, so every weekend I’m sure some of you have had a blast at one con or another. Don’t forget to save money, though, for the weekly picks of the most promising titles to hit the shelves. This New Comic Wednesday is a great week for second issues! These are all books that had a strong start a few weeks ago and look to keep it up with issue #2. There are also a couple of notable debuts as well:
New Humanz #1 – Titan1 Studios
By Taran Chadha, Ruben Rojas, and Adam Metcalfe
New Humanz is a new series with solid artwork and an interesting story line. It’s set in the publisher’s Relativity universe and is the story of a mother and daughter who are ripped from their time and sent to the far future. It’s a struggle to survive and adapt because both lost limbs in the journey. Give this one a try, it is worth picking up and jumping into this universe. The mother/daughter relationship adds heart to the story and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
The Sovereigns #1 – Dynamite Entertainment
By Ray Fawkes, Kyle Higgins, Johnny Desjardines, Jorge Fornes, and Philip Tan
The Sovereigns brings together classic Gold Key characters for a final team up against an enemy that stretches across time. Definitely pick this one up if you have ever read one of the previous iterations of the Gold Key super heroes. This is a very interesting reworking of the characters and the story is being written extremely well.
Eleanor and the Egret #2 – AfterShock Comics
By John Layman, Sam Kieth, and Ronda Pattinson
The first issue displayed beautiful artwork and a very curious story of a young lady who, along with her pet Egret, are art thieves. The first issue ended with an interesting predicament for the pair as they struggle to swallow the consequences of being investigated by the police. Pick up issue #2 for another dose of stylish art nouveau influenced artwork and fun quirky story.
World Reader #2 – AfterShock Comics
By Jeff Loveness, Juan Doe, and Rachel Deering
The beginning of the story brought us into a world were humanity has discovered it was not alone in the universe. However, something has been devouring the inhabitants of once alive worlds. The only person that may be able to find out what and why is a woman who has the ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead planets. Lovely colors and intriguing story concept are more than enough reason to add this to your list.
Night Owl Society #2 – IDW Publishing
By James Venhaus and Pius Back
Our introduction to the Night Owl Society was a fun delve into a group of school kids that form their own justice society. They left a warning for an ominous figure last issue but will there be consequences closer to home for their bravery? There is some creative use of panels in this series as well as a realistic original take on kids as super heroes. Pick this one up for a fun read.
Britannia: We Who Are About To Die #2 – Valiant Entertainment
By Peter Milligan, Juan Jose Ryp, Frankie D’Armata
The return to the world of Britannia was a scary and gruesome look at god worship, society and gladiators in ancient Rome. The introduction of a brutal female gladiator promises to inject something original into the oft-repeated venture into sand and sandal stories. Nicely detailed artwork and a dangerous mystery for the main character to unravel make Britannia a must read.
