Aliens and Star Trek: The Next Generation to get a comic book crossover in 2017

Star Trek: The Next Generation may have ended its run on TV for more than a decade now but its comic book storyline will be expanding thanks to its crossover with the Aliens franchise. This year, IDR and Dark Horse Comics will be partnering up in order to ink the Star Trek: The Next Generation VS Aliens – a side story that will put the crew of the Starship Enterprise against the brutal Xenomorphs.

Captain Picard and his crew are known for saving different life forms across the galaxy. In the upcoming crossover, however, they may have to save their own lives instead as they are faced with arguably their biggest test to date.

The crossover was first announced at the MCM London Comic Con in October 2016. The team tasked with writing the crossover’s story is the same trio that created the Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover possible: artist J.K. Woodward, and writers Scott and David Tipton.

“We’re beyond excited to team up with Dark Horse for this unique miniseries,” says Chris Cerasi, an editor for IDW. “With Scott and David writing and J.K. handling art, the blending of the Star Trek and Aliens worlds is guaranteed to be a fun, scary, thrill-a-minute ride!”

The Aliens franchise is no foreigner to crossovers. Aliens has transcended generations because it has spawned many different sub-franchises. The most popular of which is probably the Alien vs. Predator crossover. In addition, because of its crossover with Predator, both in comics and on TV, the Alien franchise was given the chance to tap into a bigger market, particularly the gaming community, with the release of the massively-popular arcade title Aliens vs. Predator back in the 90s. The video arcade game paved the way for several casual games to be launched, with the most recent standalone Aliens game becoming a huge hit on the gaming website Slingo. Additionally, Aliens: Isolation was released in 2014 and it won several year-end awards including Best Audio at the 2015 Game Developers Choice Awards, and Audio Achievement at the 2015 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Experts agree that Aliens’ upcoming crossover with Star Trek will augment Aliens’ popularity on massive scale.

Apart from the Doctor Who mash up, Captain Picard and his crew have met countless of other characters from different universes including the X-Men. As for the Aliens, they’ve battled against plenty of legends including The Batman, Green Lantern, Superman, Judge Dredd, Witchblade, and even the Terminator.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation and Aliens comic book crossover is slated to be release in April 2017. More details about the crossover can be found on the IDW website.
