By Geoff Johns, David Finch, Richard Friend & Sonia Oback
Geoff Johns’ villainous opus finally reaches its conclusion…and it does not disappoint!! Despite having the heavy price point of $4.99, every word and every panel feel like they were made to count. Alexander Luthor from Earth-3 is unleashed and now the Injustice League must find a way to stop him from becoming the strongest being on the planet. Meanwhile, Batman leads a second team to try and save the Justice League.
Forever Evil has been focused on Lex Luthor and this issues revels in every aspect of his character that readers hate or like about him. Geoff Johns’ interpretation of the character is spot-on, which makes not only this issue, but the entire run such a strong story. Instead of jumping right into some action, Johns opens the issue by tearing at the heartstrings with the interactions between Batman and Dick Grayson. Don’t worry though, there are plenty of pulse-pounding fights. Seeing Sinestro, Black Adam and Alexander Luthor face off was a real treat.
What makes this book stand out to me are the revelations and twists that unfold. Geoff is one of the few current writers who are still able to effectively use red herrings and never allow the reader to see what will happen next. The splash page at the end of the issue just blew my mind!
David Finch, Richard Friend, and Sonia Oback have just done a sublime job with this material. In this issue alone, there is so much atmosphere in every panel. In the dead of night, against the backdrop of rain, the final battles take place. Who could ask for anything better!? Despite the dark setting, no detail is lost thanks to Richard Friend who inks the fine details and makes sure the character facial expressions are not lost in translation. Sonia uses the color to properly convey the heavy emotion within the book and trust me, there’s a lot of heart put into this.
If you haven’t been keeping up with this event, go pick up the seven issues or wait for the trade. This run is an excellent example of the literary and artistic merit comic books have to offer. This is a must buy!
