Chrononauts #2

I’ll be perfectly honest, issue one was good, but the story felt like a time travel plot I had seen or read before. Luckily, this book squelched any concerns I had. As Danny arrives in 1504, he becomes caught in a vicious battle. He quickly becomes a prisoner of war, where he finds his friend Corbin. They decide to traverse time and space with no real regard for the implications this may cause and the rest is, as they say, history!

Knowing Mark Millar’s work, I should not have doubted that he would put a fascinating spin on this sci-fi subgenre. There are definitely nods to famous time travel works, which is a treat, but Millar doesn’t use those moments as a crutch nor the various times and places that are visited. The core theme he conveys is freedom, loyalty and the relationships or, in this case, friendship that bind people together. Readers who believe in these concepts will find this issue very endearing.

Knowing that the film rights for Chrononauts have been picked up almost immediately by Universal, one can’t help but envision the various hijinks Danny and Corbin get into across epochs in #2 play out as an amazing montage. I can’t freakin’ wait to see this story on the big screen, it absolutely warrants that treatment…maybe even IMAX perhaps?

The artistic all-star duo of Sean Gordon Murphy and Matt Hollingsworth continue to knock this title out of the park! Murphy, who has expressed his affinity for drawing vehicles, is allowed to really showcase his talents and passions. From the beautiful cityscapes of Samarkand, to the duo escaping from a T-Rex 65 million years ago, these two make the story such a fantastic, fun journey. Millar constantly says how talented these two are and looking at every single page in this issue shows readers why.

Despite having a somewhat cliché debut, Chrononauts has kicked off into high-gear. I highly recommend picking this book up and issue one as well. This series is only two issues in, so there’s no reason not to hop on board. Also, the cover of the second printing of issue one is pretty sweet (especially for Back to the Future fans).
