By Erik Burnham & Dan Schoening

It is extremely exciting that the new arc of Ghostbusters has a Halloween theme considering how the two are almost synonymous with each other. What would have made this book even better would be to have Ray Parker Jr.’s theme playing as you opened the book, but Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening still make this issue hold up.  In #9, the Ghostbusters encounter a ghost who actually wants to get caught.

Burnham continues his writing duties with another strong story. Incorporating an actual legend, such as Stingy Jack, into the Ghostbusters mythos always makes for an entertaining narrative. Erik presents the Faustian legend, but then puts his Ghostbusters spin on it by infusing the scenario with humor. It’s a nice balance considering how dark the original Stingy Jack tale is. Of course, there are little Easter eggs throughout the book to show the understanding and passion the creative team has for this franchise. In particular, be on the lookout for a familiar cabbie. Also, Burnham is able to incorporate the slime blower from Ghostbusters 2 in an instance that actually makes sense for its use. What makes this issue truly stand out is the fact that the reader is given a glimpse to the underworld, which could make for some great stories down the line.

Schoening is back on the art in this story arc. His caricature character designs have become such a staple for this comic book that it feels comfortable reading it, now that he’s returned. His depictions of the afterlife are so vivid and make the reader’s mind race with the possibility of seeing more in future books. The combination of his sketches and the coloring of Luis Antonio Delgado make some pages so eerie and sinister… It’s fantastic! One page to note is where Stingy Jack realizes he can use the Ghostbusters to enact his plan.

The creative team make this issue worthy of being a Ghostbusters Halloween story. It’s a strong start to this arc and builds the anticipation for the follow-up!

About The Author Erik Gonzalez

I was exposed to comics early on, one of my earliest vivid memories was picking up the entire run of Dark Horse’s Aliens vs. Predator(1990). Odd and perhaps morbid choice for a kid, I know...At the same time, I was immersed in the pop culture of the time which included, but not limited to: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and of course, Batman: The Animated Series. Upon reflection, it’s fairly evident why I’m such a zealous geek. My day job is in television operations, so basically I’m exposed to media at every turn, which is where I want to be! Writing comic book reviews is another outlet to convey my respect and fanaticism for the this graphic medium. I hope what I have to say will resonate with others and also spark heart-felt discussion. Simon Pegg said it best, “Being a geek is extremely liberating.”
