“Batwing! This is Penny-Two. What’s happening? Batwing, are you there?”

Remember Batwing? Yeah, he’s definitely in this story, and even though he hasn’t been seen in the last few issues he’s back in a huge way in Batman Eternal #29.

Writing this week from the story by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV is Ray Fawkes. Fawkes brings us back beneath Arkham and into the world of magic and the unbelievable (assuming you believe in magic). Batwing takes up most of this issue as he regains consciousness and brings us back into one of the major stories of this series – Deacon Blackfire!

On the artsy side of this week’s issue is Simon Coleby on the art and Romulo Fajardo Jr. on colors. A lot of the scenes were taking place underground with Batwing, so a good mix of the darkness and his illuminating light blue bat symbol made up a lot of the panels. Having seen the Blackfire story boiling throughout this series it’s nice to get a big piece of the story exposed this week. Coleby crafts a great scene featuring Batwing on a full page spread where he’s flying through a hoard of attackers. His wings stretched out in the air as he glides through the human debris – his eyes and chest glowing a bright blue light. Fajardo Jr. brings Batwing out from the page not only using the light but also casting the black of his suit against a mostly gray and brown background.

Batwing is in a world he doesn’t understand and takes this issue to tell Batman and Penny-Two what he’s figured out about it so far. But with everything going on in Gotham’s underground, how long does he have left?
