It’s that time of the year where we start looking back at what’s been going on throughout the year, and we asked everyone involved with the site to give us their top picks for single best issue of 2014 along with some honorable mentions. Here are our picks!
Amy’s Favorite: Rai #1
There were many strong books in the line, but Rai was one of my most anticipated, and it did not disappoint.
Honorable Mentions: The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage #1, Unity
Martin’s Favorite: Harbinger #24
The entire Death of a Renegade arc was incredibly powerful, but Harbinger #24 was one of the first books to receive a 5 star rating and that’s a HUGE deal. Harbinger may not be the most popular Valiant book, but it is definitely one of the best written. The book may now be over, but there is no reason you shouldn’t go back and reread the entire run of this series. It is by far one of the most original and exciting takes on a team book I’ve read in the 25 years I’ve been reading comics.
Honorable Mentions: Rai #1, Valiant-sized Quantum and Woody #1
Paul’s Favorite: Harbinger #24
It was hard for me to not automatically pick Rai #1 for this. It’s the most eager I’ve ever had for the debut of a title, and I was incredibly satisfied. The emotional fallout of the Death of a Renegade was the most impactful single issue, though; Dysart at his best.
Honorable Mentions: Rai #1, Armor Hunters #1.
Scott’s Favorite: Quantum and Woody #8
The only possible critique that I could have about this comic is that a lot of the humor is topical, so in twenty years fans might not enjoy it quite as much. That said, any comic with the words “Fatniss Everdeen” in it will always be tops in my book.
Honorable Mentions: Unity #3; Rai #1
