The New 52: Futures End #29

This week’s The New 52: Futures End #29 strays away from the usual bits and pieces approach this series has been composed of each week to bring us one single action packed story. This week it’s all about Red Robin and both halves of Firestorm trying to make it to Madison in time to save her from Dr. Yamazake! – And what an action packed adventure it is!

Writer Brain Azzarello along with Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens, and Keith Giffen craft a story this week with plenty of fight scenes, loads of drama, and a lot of heart. A great scene takes place in the beginning containing a lot of this issue’s type of action. It’s Cal/Tim and Ronnie Raymond (Firestorm) trying to get into the lab to save Madison, but standing in their way is a whole bunch of Cadmus guards – let them fight! This scene is great because it’s giving the action, but while fighting Cal is also giving some background and reminding us why he’s kept away from this lifestyle for so long.

Going along with the Cal and Ronnie duo of this issue is a great full-page image showing both of them running with the images of their costumed alter-egos in the background. Patrick Zircher, the artist of this issue, depicts both heroes running to save the day as they ascend the stairs. The image behind them featuring Red Robin and Firestorm is colored by Hi-Fi and explodes on the page. If all their actions didn’t let you know who you’re dealing with, this image serves to remind you – these two know what they’re doing! So much has been leading up to a big return for Cal (Tim Drake), so to finally see something like this from him comes as a welcomed surprise in this week’s issue.

This week deals with some really dramatic/heartfelt scenes, but don’t worry, you’ll still get your action fix. Just bring a box of tissues in case though.
