On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we’re joined by founder of Okazu and yuri scholar, Erica Friedman, to once again revisit the works of Nagata Kabi with a discussion of another one of her self-reflective personal memoirs with My Alcoholic Escape From Reality! In which we visit Kabi during her time recovering in the hospital from severe pancreatitis due to her excessive drinking, as well chronicling through her artist’s journey of deciding between working on either fiction or non-fiction. We discuss our thoughts on this book in particular and once again grapple with the difficult and complicated feelings we get from reading Kabi’s works as pieces of entertainment, as well as her journey as an artist up to this point.

This discussion was one we originally recorded around the time of its English release last year and uploaded exclusively on Patreon as a bonus podcast, but have made it available to the public in time for our upcoming episode on Kabi’s newest memoir with My Wandering Warrior Existence, coming next week! But if you can’t wait until then, its already available over on our Patreon at our $2 tier for those who want to listen to it early! Or if you sign up for the next tier up, you can listen to more exclusive bonus podcasts like this one! Whatever tier you choose, we appreciate any support you give us!!

About The Author Colton

Colton is just your regular glasses wearing nerd residing in Saint Louis, Misery (that's a joke) who loves reading and collecting manga as a hobby and also records too many podcasts! He started off his podcasting escapades in 2013 when he created Life Lessons: The Gintama Manga Cast, which was a show dedicated to Gintama and its past English release of the manga. From there he became the co-host of shows such as the Manga Corner from Anime3000, Heavenly Kings, One Podcast Prevails and many more. Colton first discovered manga back in 2006 when he bought his first issue of Shonen Jump, and ever since then, his love and passion for manga took off from there! His favorite titles include Sket Dance, Eyeshield 21, My Hero Academia and much, much more. Colton can be found frequenting sites such as Anilist and Twitter under the handle of sniperking323.
