By Jonathan Hickman, Valerio Schiti and David Curiel
This week we get the Jonathan Hickman finale of his X-Men run with Inferno. A lot of what Hickman has been doing will lead up to this mini event. It’s hard to say if this is a true ending since Hickman is leaving prematurely, but it’s an ending none the less.
This issue plants all kinds of seeds as to what is really going on and who is pulling all the strings. We open with Xavier and a being resurrected by Emma. This is an interesting scene. Hickman also gives us some pages with the Orchis. The Orchis have been a formidable foe, and are not dumb by any means. They are onto the resurrection protocols the mutants are doing. While the Orchis are not sexy villains like Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister, they have proven to be intelligent and dangerous. Hickman is setting up all his ducks in a row to make sure that after this event things go according to the blueprint he envisioned. Inferno #1 does a good job of setting things up, and we are left with more questions than answers at this point. The excitement for the next issue is sure to build after reading this one.
The pencils this issue are handled by Valerio Schiti with colors by David Curiel. Schiti does a phenomenal job on this issue. The line work on the flashback to one of Moira’s previous lives is outstanding, There is also a great panel of war captains walking off into the sunset that stands out. Schiti draws the issue perfectly, The colors by David Curiel are outstanding, as usual. Mystique’s blue colored skin pops off the page with the vibrant color work. A page where Moira gets burned alive is sinister looking and shaded perfectly. The pencils and colors are amazing this issue and really go a long way in making this book even better. Schiti and Curiel kill it and continue to be an example of what great art can do for a good script.
Inferno #1 checks all the boxes for a solid first issue. Jonathan Hickman gives us mystery, deception and betrayal all in the first issue. Where this goes will be an exciting ride that any self respecting X-Men fan shouldn’t miss. The pencils and colors are amazing and highlight how epic this series can be with the right people working on it. Inferno is setting the standard for modern day X-Men stories.
