The Tithe #1

There have been many comics in the past that focus on religion, and many of them have been very preachy. The Tithe is a book that offers both sides of the argument. It’s a book that looks at the corruption that some churches may have, but it also gives a voice to those who use religion as a tool to comfort themselves in everyday life. Ultimately, it’s a tough story to dislike because of this balance.

Having two characters that have completely different viewpoints on religion is one of the things Matt Hawkins does right in this first issue. It’s pretty easy to tell a story that’s one sided, but Hawkins has his pair of investigators on the polar opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to religion. This adds to the spice of both characters and as a reader we can see each person’s point. Hawkins also plans out an intelligent robbery for this issue. While there really isn’t anything new about a Robin Hood hold up, the way it was executed was well done and enjoyably. Within the first issue we find ourselves liking many of these characters, and that means Matt Hawkins is doing his job as a writer.

The art is done by Rahsan Ekedal, and it is excellent. Ekedal has a nice clean style that is absolutely fit for a book like this. His attention to detail in the panels is great, right down to the serial numbers and brands on the cash that’s being dropped into church buckets. Ekedal’s pencils never take a dip in quality, even as characters stand at a distance, the detail doesn’t fade. This is a very well drawn issue and if Rahsan Ekedal isn’t a name you know right now, it will be soon enough.

Introductory issues have to hook a reader or they may pass on the book, and The Tithe should be able to snag readers. Matt Hawkins is putting together a nice streak of good book lately and this should be added to the list. Rahsan Ekedal did great work on this issue and certainly looks to have a bright future in the business. The Tithe is a book that deserves a read, the good writing and excellent art will keep you coming back.
