A-Force #1

A-Force has been the topic of discussion for a while….because, you know, the internet. Apparently some non-comic book reader lady thinks the cover is porn or something. Whatever. Nobody that matters cares what she thinks. This book is a ton of fun and that’s all we care about.

For starters, if you aren’t reading Secret Wars, A-Force may not be for you. The story takes place within Battleworld and Secret Wars may be needed to get a feel for what is actually going on. In Battleword, Doom is god and different realities are placed in their own separate territories. A-Force’s city is one of the more interesting lands, being populated by (almost) every female superhero of any sort of importance. There are civilians there, all of whom seem to be very happy and well protected. She-Hulk is the leader of A-Force and also serves as Baroness of their domain. She takes her new role very seriously and A-Force looks to be one of the more powerful teams around.

Of course, nothing can stay perfect. An ancient beast appears on their shores, which causes a series of terrible events to occur. First, Ms. America Chavez is punished by Doom, followed by She-Hulk’s fall and vow to do something about redeeming herself on behalf of her friends and civilians.

Our lovely writing team does a great job of setting up a premise, so that issue 2 can fire on all cylinders. Despite the setup, the story is still enough to entertain and present some proper characterization. The team is very close and you can feel the camaraderie among these amazing women. It’s really everything we could have asked for.

The art is very serviceable. In most instances, this issue looks like your standard Marvel title. That’s not a bad thing, though. Our favorite Marvel gals look great. They look strong, but nobody is oversexualized. That’s important, especially since critical eyes will be giving it a look.

A-Force is so much fun. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a comic that has She-Hulk as the leader and Captain Marvel punching a freakin’ shark. All comics should be required to have Carol Danvers punching something.
