“Something or someone is coming. And it’s gonna be bad.”

Will Superman finally make a return back to the streets of Metropolis and beyond in order to fight off the oncoming invasion? More teasers come this week to the hopeful return of the Man of Steel in the newest issue of The New 52: Futures End.

Writer Brian Azzarello along with fellow writers Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens, and Keith Giffen use this week to jostle us around a bit more from story to story (the Frankenstein/Amethyst moments once again being a highlight – much like last week). We’re also given some funny scenes due to Fifty-Sue’s new role as daughter to Lana and Cole (and her new brother!).

On the artwork side of this week’s issue is penciller/inker Stephen Thompson along with colors by Hi-Fi. A great scene comes via Superman and Constantine as they fight off a rather peculiar horde attacking from a nearby cornfield. A top panel shows Superman breaking the small attacker from his back by doing that cool outstretched arms thing heroes do when they’re piled on by enemies – thus making all the enemies fly off in different directions. The panels even showcase devastation through color as Hi-Fi creates an intense scene (featuring a very deadly cornstalk) as the panel blends from yellow to purple (light to dark/life to death). The page ends with a mild return of the Man of Steel as he blazes from his eyes his crimson beams to rid of some more foes/light the corn on fire! (He better put that fire out).

This week brings some funny moments as well as some sad ones. Are we saying goodbye to some old friends? Or is hope still out there?
